Colomitos Beach: A Gem on Vallarta's South Coast

There are many beaches in Puerto Vallarta that attract travelers, but none quite like Colomitos Beach. This fabulous spot on the south coast of Banderas Bay is perfect for a quick dip in the sea while hiking south or for spending the day soaking up the sun and playing in the waves. If you’re looking for unique things to do in Puerto Vallarta, a visit to Colomitos is a must. Colomitos Beach is located at the southern end of Banderas Bay, between Boca de Tomatlán and Las Ánimas. This small beach, accessible only by boat or on foot, is in Cabo Corrientes, a municipality in Jalisco just south of Puerto Vallarta. You may be surprised to learn that there are only two ways to reach Colomitos Beach: by boat or on foot. While each is an adventure in itself, there are a few things you should know before heading to Colomitos, one of the best beaches in Puerto Vallarta.

Hiking to Colomitos, Puerto Vallarta

If you want some exercise and a low-cost adventure, hike to Colomitos Beach. First, take a bus or taxi to Boca de Tomatlán, a village on Vallarta’s south coast. Once there, ask around, and you will be directed to a trail that follows the coast and leads you from one beach to another. The hiking route passes by houses, climbs hills, and winds through the jungle. If you choose to hike, be sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and pack light. You’ll traverse the mountainside before arriving at one of Puerto Vallarta’s most beautiful beaches, and while the hike is worth it, it is not as easy as you might expect.

Taking a Boat to Colomitos

If hiking to Colomitos isn’t your thing, then the only other way to get there is by boat. While you can rent a yacht and spend the day exploring Banderas Bay, there are plenty of pangas, or small fishing boats, that depart from Boca de Tomatlán and drop you off at the beach for a reasonable price. These collective water taxis charge around 80 pesos per person, unless you request a private trip.
