Downtown Puerto Vallarta, or the “Centro,” is just south of the Hotel Zone and north of the Rio Cuale. Colonial-era buildings with red-tiled roofs, terraces filled with plants, and cobblestone streets lined with restaurants, bars, and shops all characterize the traditional style of the town center. The malecon is the beachfront boardwalk showcasing various statues and sculptures and is where tourists like to go to enjoy the panoramic views of Banderas Bay. A short walk over is the zocalo, or the main plaza, where the picturesque Our Lady of Guadalupe Church is located. Vibrant cultural events happen in the center of town all day and into the night. The Rio Cuale River separates downtown Vallarta from the Romantic Zone.
